The Scholarship Fund

The Meghan P. Birdsall Scholarship Fund was established by the Birdsall family following the tragic death of their daughter, Meghan, in 1998. The youngest of Jerry and Nancy Birdsall's three children, Meghan grew up in Essex Fells, NJ, attended Essex Fells Elementary School and, in 1996, graduated with honors from West Essex High School. Meghan was intelligent and confident. Graceful, with an artistic flair, she embraced life with her own special spirit. Her loss is deeply felt by all who knew and loved her…family, friends, and the community at large.

The Meghan P. Birdsall Scholarship Fund is designed to provide financial assistance to West Essex High School students for their college education. It is open to any student, male or female, regardless of town of residence or field of study. Scholarships will be granted on the basis of need and excellence, and all West Essex High School seniors will be eligible. For an application, click here.

The Scholarship is supported primarily by contributions from family, friends, residents and businesses in Essex Fells, Fairfield, Roseland, North Caldwell, and the surrounding communities. To date, scholarships have been granted to 31 deserving young people. Each of them is now able to fulfill their dreams by attending the college of their choice.

Up to 60% of West Essex graduates now require some form of financial aid to complete their college education, and tuition costs continue to rise dramatically. The goal is to raise $100,000.00, creating a self-perpetuating scholarship fund that will provide assistance for many years to come. The "Friends of Meg" Fund-raising committee is working hard to achieve this goal, and they need your help and support.

All donations are greatly appreciated and are tax-deductible. The Meghan P. Birdsall Scholarship Fund Inc. is a 501c(3) tax-exempt charitable organization. Many corporations will also match employee donations. If your company has such a program, please contact the Human Resource Department for information regarding their Matching Gift Program.

The Birdsall family and the "Friends of Meg" are dedicated to furthering young people's education. Your contribution will enable deserving students to receive and enjoy a college education that will benefit them throughout their lives. Please support us by remembering Meg with a donation.
